He wanted to make Pandora happy, but he was not about to cross Zeus. She asked Epimetheus to open it, but he said no. Every time she looked at it, she wondered more. Pandora could not stop wondering what was in it. Everyone was happy, and that included the newlyweds.Įxcept for one thing-that box. The box was locked, and Zeus warned them never to open it.įor a while, that was not a problem. The gift was a beautiful wooden box that anybody who saw it would admire. She was also curious, of course, but Epimetheus had no reason to worry about that.Įpimetheus also liked a second gift that Zeus presented. She was bright and she was beautiful and she was a good musician. In fact, Epimetheus thought Pandora was a wonderful gift and a wonderful wife. Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus, paid no attention when Prometheus said to be careful of any gift from Zeus. When Zeus sent Pandora to Earth, he gave her to Epimetheus as a wife. In this story, Pandora went to Earth and caused a huge problem because of her curiosity. He was angry at the human race because a rebel god, Prometheus, had given people the gift of fire. Zeus was the head god of all the gods and goddesses who lived on Mount Olympus in ancient Greece. She herself was a gift, a special gift that Zeus sent to Earth. However, Pandora lived in very ancient times, according to a Greek myth. Quickly, before she could slam the lid shut, one tiny bug flew out. Pandora opened the lid to show him it was empty. Pandora slammed the lid closed, but it was too late.Įpimetheus heard her weeping. As she raised the lid, out flew all the bad things in the world today - envy, sickness, hate, disease. One day, she used the key to open the box. It was Pandora whose curiosity got the better of her. The note said: "DO NOT OPEN." Attached to the note was a key. It was not the truth of course, but then nearly everyone in theĪncient Greek world knew better than to believe the mighty Zeus.Įpimetheus was kind-hearted and gentle and thoughtful, but he was no fool. That's why Zeus had decided to give Pandora in marriage to Epimetheus. Hephaestus, had to be punished and that's why he was chained to a rock,īut he felt sorry that this punishment left Epimetheus without the company of his brother. Zeus named his lovely new daughter Pandora. He brought her to life, and then brought her to Zeus. Hephaestus made a woman out of clay, a beautiful woman. Zeus had a more sneaky punishment in mind.įirst, Zeus ordered the gods' handyman, the maker of things - Hephaestus - to make Zeus a daughter. Once Prometheus was chained to a rock, Zeus went after Prometheus' brother, the gentle, kind-hearted Epimetheus. As punishment, Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock for many years.īut that was not enough punishment, not for Zeus. Zeus was furious that his order had been ignored. Because he had a kind heart, and he knew how much man needed fire for food and warmth, Prometheus gave man the secret of fire even though Zeus had told all the gods not to do that. Angry over something or other, Zeus had declared that man did not deserve fire. One day, Prometheus got in trouble with Zeus. Once up a time, a long time ago, there were two brothers named Epimetheus and Prometheus.
